artist reactions

some artists related to the objectives of our first project are gregory crewdson, teun hocks, jeff wall, and cindy sherman. the following paragraphs are just reactions to their body of work in general.

Gregory Crewdson
crewdson's work strikes the viewer as cold and off-putting. the tone of his work is somber and lonely, and makes the viewer uncomfortable. most often, he shows the human in relation to manmade objects (buildings, vehicles), rather than in relation to other humans. when humans are pictured together, they seem entirely disconnected.

Teun Hocks
hocks deals with the very human aspects of failure and frustration. he shows all sorts of ridiculous, impossible situations - impossible in the sense that the circumstance is just an annoyance. he shows images like dropping a stick when you've got a bundle in your arms, and more unrealistically, being trapped on an iceberg when your stuff floats away in all different directions.

Jeff Wall
wall focuses on capturing the little moments in life - whether they be moments of alienation, anger, or complete absurdity. i found his work the most interesting. the concept of capturing several actors all sharing a split second of time is really intriguing to me.

Cindy Sherman
sherman's work entails her dressing up and posing as different female stereotypes. some pieces show women as props, but more interestingly, the ones that look more spontaneous make the woman appear somewhat lacking grace.

influences

Shel Silverstein and all his creations

Yoda

Bob Dylan

basically, these are some things that i like. i listen to music a lot, and read less than i'd like to. my inspiration comes from the long talks i have with my friends and the long walks i take by myself. no one source really inspires me, everything i make is a mash-up of all the things i collect from day-to-day experience.

first post

i guess the way to start this is with some basics.

i'm alley, i'm nineteen, an art teaching major, a sociology minor, and a tech in the sculpture studio. this is where i'll be documenting my work for a digital imaging class.

i can promise you i'm much more interesting in person. i don't really have the patience for any of this, and i'm not too good with words. i think human interaction is way more important than anything you can read online anyways.
